May the Forte be with you: Oldham boss Lee Johnson prays ’50/50′ top scorer can figure against Gillingham

Oldham Athletic will be sweating on whether top scorer Jonathan Forte will be fit for Saturday as they look to continue their recent run of form against Gillingham at the Sportsdirect.com Park.

After three straight wins in all competitions the Latics seem to have sprung into life in the last couple of weeks after failing to win all of their opening five games.

Despite a poor start to the season from his side, manager Lee Johnson was confident that their form would turn around.

“I felt the run was coming,” Johnson told the club’s official website.

“I was disappointed with some of the reactions against Preston because I felt it was blown out of proportion.

“We went to a good side and dominated so I thought it was good to finally show what we were about against Doncaster.

“We ground out a result against Bradford and I thought we were convincing without the score line against Fleetwood.”

Forte, who has five goals so far this season including the winner from the penalty spot against Fleetwood last weekend, was brought off after an hour with a thigh injury and Johnson will hope his star man is available for Saturday.

“He’s responded well to treatment but we’ve got to see with him really. He is still 50/50 to play on Saturday and we are quite positive about him,” the Latics boss said.

Johnson was quick to praise Gillingham boss Peter Taylor and felt they deserved more from their game last weekend with Coventry.

“I really like Peter (Taylor) as a man and a manager. He’s a good guy whose football knowledge is very good.

“They should have come away with at least a point, if not three, and they dealt with the occasion very well.

“They are a good team and they are going to be a tough team to break down.”
