Form goes out window v Liverpool: Man Utd wary of Anfield rivals, says Evans

Manchester United’s five-match winning streak will count for nothing as they meet fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, according to Jonny Evans.

Robin van Persie’s double at Southampton has left Louis van Gaal’s side in third place – six points and six places better off than at the same point last season.

Recent results represent United’s best run of form since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement but Evans has played in enough of these fixtures to know anything can happen.

“We are in a bit of form in terms of results and Liverpool are not but all form goes out of the window in these games and anything can happen,” Evans told MUTV.

“I haven’t seen many of their games this season, but I watched a bit of the one in the Champions League the other night against Basel.

“Obviously, they were under a wee bit of pressure to get a big result that they didn’t get in the end.”

The Red Devils must win in order to ensure that they remain in the Champions League qualification spaces but will be without record signing Angel Di Maria.

However they have won 10 of the last 12 Old Trafford fixtures against Liverpool in all competitions.

And Liverpool arrive at Old Trafford on the back of a torrid first third of the season as Brendan Rodgers’ side continue to struggle with last year’s player of the season, Luis Suarez.

“Luis Suarez has gone and maybe they aren’t as strong,” added Evans.

“Even so they have still got some fantastic players who can create magic on the pitch and that is something we will have to be careful of.”

Summer signing and perennial bad boy Mario Balotelli is back in training, and will be hoping to produce a repeat of his two goal performance in Manchester City’s 6-1 victory at Old Trafford in 2011.

Meanwhile Van Gaal will be hoping that Van Persie can keep up his recent return to form, the Dutch striker has six goals in his last nine appearances against Liverpool.
