From Hong Kong to Manchester: Sale Sharks’ owners appoint Gordon McKie as chairman

By Alan Ross

Sale Sharks have appointed former Scottish Rugby Union chief executive Gordon McKie as the club’s new chairman.

Gordon McKie, who was the top man in Scottish rugby between 2005 and 2011, has been chosen by Sharks’ owners Brian Kennedy and Ian Blackhurst to lead the club forward.

Mr McKie was previously chief executive of the Hong Kong Football Association and has held a number of senior positions in other businesses as well.

“I have known Gordon for several years and I believe he is the man to chair the club at this stage,” Mr Kennedy said in a statement.

“He is highly respected within the game of Rugby Union and his commercial, organisation and administration experience will be of great benefit to the club.”

For his part Mr McKie said he was looking forward to working at Sale and hoping to bring success to the Sharks.

“I am pleased to take on this new challenge at this stage in my career and become involved again with sport,” he stated.

“With my experience of business, and more specifically performance rugby, I am hopeful that I can build upon what has been achieved to date by Brian and Ian.

“In my capacity as chairman, I look forward to working with the Board, and supporting the management team, the staff and the loyal supporters in contributing to the future success of the club.”

Elsewhere at Sale James Jennings, who has been acting as a non-executive for the past two seasons, has been appointed deputy chairman and will continue to represent the Sharks on the Board of Premiership Rugby.
