World record attempt aims to raise stroke awareness in Wigan – and you can take part sitting down

A mass world record attempt aimed at increasing stroke awareness will take place in Wigan tomorrow – and you can take part.

Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust’s Active Living Team hope to earn a place in the Guinness Book of World Records with a mass chair-based exercise session at the Robin Park Arena.

The current record stands at 262 and Event Organiser Debbie McCann urged volunteers to sign up and help smash the record.

“One of the great ways of reducing your risk of stroke is through exercise,” she said.

“This is why we are hoping to smash the world record for the most people taking part in chair-based exercise.”

The number of Wigan Borough residents suffering from stroke is slightly higher than the national average, so the event hopes to raise awareness and offer advice to guard against it.

Chair-based exercise is commonly used to reduce the chances of suffering a stroke, and it is also used by sufferers to aid their recovery.

Dr Kate Ardern, Wigan Borough’s Director of Public Health believes the event will be a fun way to learn about a very serious issue.

“I would urge as many people as possible to come along for a great time and to support something that can help us all,” she said.

“This is a fun way to find out more about this serious condition and how you can take positive steps to improve your own health and wellbeing.

“It could also be your chance to get into the history books by being part of an actual world record attempt.”

The event is open to everyone and will also feature free NHS health checks, information stalls from Think Ahead and the Stroke Association and a chance to consult health professionals.

Wigan Athletic mascots Phoenix and Blue will be in attendance and visitors can also try fitness-focused interactive gaming on an X-Box and a Wii Fit.

There will also be free hotpot, with an additional vegetarian option, laid on at the event.
