Fear no-one: Beat Real Madrid and Champions League is Manchester United's, claims Peter Schmeichel

By Alex Bysouth

Treble-winning hero Peter Schmeichel insists Manchester United will have one hand on the Champions League if they knock-out Spanish giants Real Madrid in the last 16.

The Dane was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side which added the Premier League title and an FA Cup triumph to their European success in 1999.

And despite Madrid’s rivals Barcelona and Serie A champions Juventus still being in the competition, Schmeichel believes the Red Devils fear no one.

“We go into this game knowing how hard it will be against Real Madrid,” he told the club website. “But also knowing that we can beat them.

“If we manage that then it doesn’t matter who we get in the quarter-finals, because there’s no cause to fear anybody after that.

“I’m very optimistic.”

United face Jose Mourinho’s La Liga champions at the Bernabeu tonight and the former shot-stopper is confident they intend on taking the game to the hosts.

“While we’ve definitely improved our defending recently, we’re playing to score goals,” he added. “We know that whoever we play against we’re going to make chances and score.

“It’s as tough a game as you can get, and I’ve always felt that we’re much better against stronger teams.

“Certainly our results so far this season have shown that, and they should provide plenty of cause for confidence.”

And Schmeichel is convinced being drawn against Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo and co is the perfect draw for the Old Trafford outfit.

“It’s probably the best draw we could have got,” he explained.

“I’d far rather we be drawn against Real Madrid than Shakhtar Donetsk, at least this way nobody is in any doubt of exactly how good our opponents are.”
