All to play for: Danny Welbeck claims all-important away goal as Manchester United draw at Real Madrid

Manchester United got the all-important away goal as Danny Welbeck’s second of the season gave United a draw against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League last 16.

Welbeck, who had only previously scored against Stoke City this season, gave United a first-half lead with a deft header, but Cristiano Ronaldo equalised against his former club minutes later.

Often-mocked goalkeeper David De Gea – returning to face former city rivals Real after starting out at Atletico Madrid – was United’s star man, pulling off a succession of superb stops.

Top-scorer Robin van Persie had two chances within two second half minutes to restore the Red Devils’ lead, but Diego Lopez saved first before former Liverpool man Xabi Alonso cleared off the line.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men kept pushing for a second goal, but were happy to take Jose Mourinho’s men back to Old Trafford in two weeks’ time on level terms.
