The final countdown: Superclub Sankeys announces last ten nights as Manchester gets ready to say goodbye

By John McDougall

Legendary Manchester nightclub Sankeys may be set to close its doors for the final time next month but the venue will certainly be going out with a bang with ten genre-bending nights between now and the May Bank Holiday.

The final 12-hour show on May Day Bank Holiday Monday sold out in four hours as Mancunian clubbers get ready to bid farewell to the venue after 19 dance-packed years.

Here MM looks forward to the ten shows prior to this and highlights some of the acts set to pump their baselines through the walls for the final time.

Friday 12 April

The first of ten events planned to give Sankeys a proper send-off starts tonight with doors opening at 11pm, with Zed Bias headlining.

Derbyshire DJ Karma Kid, female Radio 1 act Monki and Liverpool house producer Friend Within are among those to help kick off a month of festivities.

Saturday 13 April

Keeping the party going until 6am this Saturday will be Argentinean DJ Guti, who will aim to bring a South America fiesta to the North West with a live set.

Detroit producer Kenny Larkin will provide some techno beats while German artist Mathias Kaden will also aim to shine in the first weekend since the announcement.

Friday 19 April

Underground house duo Waze and Odyssey headline this event and will be flanked by electronic trio Dark Sky, with Locked Groove and Voyeur supporting.

Saturday 20 April

House party Continue will take place at Sankeys for the last time, with Berlin techno producer Shed sure to get people in the groove.

Techno creator 2562, 50 Weapons’ founder Benjamin Damage, Doc Daneeka and Continue founder Jozef K set to make this party a huge night for all.

Friday 26 April

This weekend sees a rescheduled show from Radio 1’s legendary Kiwi DJ Zane Lowe taking a break from the airwaves to play a much anticipated show.

Bristol electronic producing duo Koan Sound and Dutch Rudder provide support for the former MTV2 star in what will surely set the night on fire.

Saturday 27 April

Spanish Mindshake master Paco Osuna headlines and Darius Syrossian will get the Ancoats faithful with their hands in the air before jetting off to Sankeys Ibiza.

Parisian DJ Djebali – who started in 2001 – and house and disco fanatics Wolf Music complete a line-up that will have people dancing until the early hours.

Sunday 28 April

The first of two Sunday shows planned sees Giles Smith – who toured Europe in 2010 – and London’s James Priestley take to the Sankeys decks.

They will be followed by Moid and John Hanley as the penultimate weekend at the venue comes to a close and all ears perk up for an emotional farewell weekend.

Friday 3 May

The first of four shows in as many days in the May Bank Holiday Weekend starts with a Cream Special with sets from Liverpool icons Max Vangeli and AN21.

Tim Owen, George Kafetzis, Tom Staar, Nick Ashworth and the Querky DJs help support a weekend that will no doubt live long in the memory.

Saturday 4 May

Sankey’s final Saturday show sees the return of talented Parisian trio Dyed Soundorom, Shonky and Dan Ghenacia to headline after their takeover last Boxing Day went down a storm.

LALOOP and friends complete a line-up that will be sure to get Mancunian clubbers excited before the penultimate night Sankeys.

Sunday 5 May

The penultimate show at the Radium Street club will see Gareth Emery make an emotional return to Sankeys for the final time.

The DJ – voted seventh in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 in 2010 – will be supported by Craig Connelly, Sy Chan and Jason Herd as the venue prepares to shut its doors for good.
