Get off the couch and get fit! Ju Jitsu instructor offers free self-defence classes in Tameside

By Danielle Wainwright

Get off the couch and get fit, make friends and feel confident is the message from a martial arts centre opening in Tameside – offering free self-defence classes throughout November for adults and children.

Ashton Atemi Ju Jitsu will hold the free classes in the hopes of encouraging residents to take up a form of martial arts instead of sitting on the couch watching TV or playing video games.

The classes will be taking place at Retrofit Gym in Ashton with chief instructor Ciarán McLoughlin inviting friends and family to come along and take part or even just watch.

Ashton-resident Ciarán, who has practised Ju Jitsu for more than 15 years, is excited about the prospect of introducing new people to the martial art as a way of keeping fit.

“So much of our lives are spent sitting around watching the television or playing video games,” he said.

“These classes aren’t just about getting fit, they’re about meeting new people, boosting self-confidence and getting out of the house to try something different.”

Atemi Ju Jitsu is a dynamic blend of throwing, grappling, wrestling, locking, striking and street defence techniques.

Ciarán has built up a strong raport with his students which he claims is down to tailoring everything he does to meet the needs of participants

“We’re not training anyone to take on the world, but we do want people to feel like they’ve achieved something after attending a class,” he said.

The classes will be running from 7pm to 8pm on Thursday November 14 for adults and Saturday November 16 10am – 11am for children.
