Special What's On in Manchester: New Year's Eve round-up – to help you plan the big night

By Felicity Robertson

Whether you love it or hate it, you can’t avoid it; the New Year is almost upon us again. Here at MM we have plenty of suggestions of things to do if you fancy a celebratory night out or a quiet night in.

If gambling and glamour are up your street you should get yourself along to Casino 235 where they are hosting a New York themed evening. There are three different packages available ranging from £35 per person to £65 per person.

A four course sit-down meal with a pianist is £45 per person. The other options available are a hot and cold American style buffet with an Elvis impersonator or a four course sit down meal with an Elvis show which is £65.

Sophie Baxter, Marketing Assistant at Manchester 235 Casino, said: “We want to be able to offer everything in one venue, whether you are an avid gamer or have come in for pure entertainment purposes.

“We are open 24 hours so can offer round the clock entertainment.”

As it’s the New Year you should gamble any money you got at Christmas and double it (or fritter it away if you’re unlucky). It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose as there’s always some intoxicated generous person at the bar who’s had one too many offering to buy everyone else’s drinks for them.

For all those students out there who can’t afford to be gambling, Manchester’s No.1 indie club, 5th Avenue, is hosting its annual sell out evening with guest Ibiza Rocks DJ, Nicola Bear. Tickets are a bargain £8 if bought in advance and £12 if there are any left on the night! Drinks are dirt cheap with jagerbombs and vodbuls priced at £1.50 and promotion bottles at £1.60.

It will probably be no different to any other night at 5th Ave except everyone will be high on life (and other stuff), you will end up even drunker than usual and your feet will stick to the floor a bit more than normal. Another gem about New Year at 5th Ave is that there will be plenty of choice for a midnight partner, not that you will care what they look like by that stage, if you can still actually see at all.

If you consider yourself more edgy but still seeking a cheap night out, The Roadhouse is hosting its psychedelic club night, Revolver. The music is all on vinyl so you get that nostalgic vibe, even if most of the music was released 30 years before you were born.

If grungy student clubs and gambling aren’t your scene then don’t panic, there is still a variety of events that may appeal to you.

Remember Darren Hayes, lead singer of Savage Garden? Ringing any bells? He is playing Manchester Academy on New Year’s Eve. With hits such as Truely Madly Deeply and I Want You along with his solo material, Hayes could deliver a memorable New Year.  Fans have described him as the best live performer ever so let’s hope he doesn’t disappoint!

And where to stay after all the merriment? Well let’s face it, you’re never short of hotels in Manchester.

Another option is Manchester’s luxury Lowry Hotel has an NYE deal offering a king deluxe room with a bottle of prosecco on arrival. If you fancy a night in there are numerous spa treatments to choose from or you can make full use of the complimentary saunas and relaxation rooms. However, if you want to venture in to the city you are only a ten minute journey from the centre and can find many festive events going on.

If going out really isn’t your thing, Chiquitos are offering a three course meal and a glass of bubbly for a bargain £19.99. You can find the restaurant located at various destinations across Manchester. There’s one in the city centre in the Printworks, one at Ashton Moss and one at Parrswood, Didsbury. You may see the running theme here? All three are situated right next to a cinema.

So here is my next suggestion, if you don’t feel like putting your party hat on and you got no invites anyway, you don’t need an invite to go to the cinema to watch people celebrating New Year in the blockbuster film, New Year’s Eve.
