‘Fantastic fella’ David Flitcroft looks to make immediate impact at Bury after Ronnie Jepson praise

By Amy Lofthouse

New Bury manager David Flitcroft has expressed his excitement about taking the reins at Bury ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Northampton.

The ex-Barnsley manager was appointed mid-week and has received the seal of approval from previous caretaker manager Ronnie Jepson, who described Flitcroft as a ‘fantastic fella.’

Flitcroft, speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, made it clear that his remit in the next few games was to get some points on the board.

“Ultimately my job is results and nothing (about squad changes) will be personal,” he said.

“I’ll be working with players over the next few games to make a competitive team.

“If a player doesn’t fit what I want to achieve here then I will let them know and all sides can look to part on good terms so nobody loses out.”

Flitcroft will get a chance to see the players in action on Saturday at the JD Stadium as they look to extend their impressive run against second-bottom Northampton.

In 27 previous meetings, the Shakers have come out on top 11 times compared to Northampton’s seven victories.

The two last met three years ago in August 2010, where neither side emerged on top after a 1-1 draw.

Despite Bury’s precarious standing in League Two – they are currently two points clear of the drop zone – Flitcroft said he had no desire to spend excessively to improve the Bury squad.

“That is what I do well, I recruit and will try and shape this squad,” he said.

“I’ve seen some really top players. Those players I’ve identified are hungry; they want to be part of what we are doing.

“There are a lot of players out there that are not playing a lot of first team football and we will be working on that in January.”
