Mystery still surrounds the reason as to why Peter Kay has cancelled his world tour.

The Bolton comedian announced he had decided to cancel his tour “due to unforeseen family circumstances.”

Kay, 44, had scheduled his first world tour for eight years which was due to begin in April 2018 and run through to June 2019 – with the tour concluding at London’s iconic O2 Arena.

This tour comprised 110 gigs in Britain and Ireland, but Kay confirmed in a statement that these gigs will no longer taking place.

“Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects,” Kay announced.

“This unfortunately includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance for Life shows and any outstanding live work commitments.

“My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first.”

He also expressed his wishes for privacy, saying that he wanted to protect his family from publicity.

Kay has been married to wife Susan since 2001.

The couple have one child together – 13-year-old Charlie Michael.

Susan and Michael have been fortunate to witness the success of their husband and father down the years, the Phoenix Nights star has a net worth of around £43 million.

His last world tour in 2010-11 sold to 1.2 million people – the biggest selling comedy tour of all-time.

This number was expected to be broke again in 2018-19.

With tickets were selling for hundreds of pounds on secondary sites, the tour was expected to be worth £85 million.

Fans who bought tickets first-hand will have the chance to get their money back.

The mysterious cancellation of Kay’s tour will be upsetting for his fans.

And given his previous comments that this tour could be his last, it is likely that Kay will never take to the stage again.
