Moss Side pensioner, 83, sexually assaulted by ‘friend’ prompts hunt for witnesses

An 83-year-old woman from Moss Side was sexually assaulted inside her own home yesterday by a man who had abused her trust.

Police were called to the South Manchester address by a friend of the old woman shortly after 1pm on Tuesday.

The offender had grown close to the elderly victim over the past few weeks, and it was during yesterday’s visit when he subjected her to the horrifying ordeal.

Detective Inspector Rebecca Duggan, said: “This is a disturbing incident that has left the victim distressed. Specially trained officers are supporting her and assisting her family to care for her at this difficult time.

“The local community will be shocked to hear what has happened but I can reassure them we are thoroughly investigating. If you have any concerns, please do not be afraid to speak to your local officer.”

The old woman tried to escape around midday after the attack had taken place, by agreeing to walk with him and her two dogs in Alexandra Park, where the offender asked two passers-by for a lighter.

The police want to speak to those two potential witnesses and are urging them to come forward.

The man is described as Asian or mixed-race, 30s-40s, and was wearing dark clothing and a hat.

Detective Inspector Duggan added: “I would ask anyone who saw the man and woman in Alexandra Park to please get in touch. We are keen to speak to the two people that the man asked to borrow lighters from to come forward and assist our investigation.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 4223 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55 111.
