‘Stranger danger’ warning as Bury man charged with attempting to abduct two children, 7 and 8

A man has been charged with attempting to abduct two young children in Bury.

Rhys Seymour 29, from Walmersley, Bury, has been charged with two counts of abduction and one count of attempted abduction of a child and has been remanded in custody.

The charge relates to two incidents on May 3 and 8 when police received reports that a man had offered two children, aged 7 and 8, money in Clarence Park to play games in the woods.

Both children ran away after being approached and came to no physical harm.

Seymour was arrested on May 12 following a police investigation and appeared at Bury Magistrates’ Court today.

He was remanded in custody.

Detective Inspector Denise Pye said: “The incidents are clearly very distressing for the young children and their families and I want to reassure the community that a man has now been charged following a proactive police investigation.

“Our enquiries are still continuing so if you have any information about these or similar incidents please get in touch.

“Officers from our neighbourhood policing teams are working with schools in the area to reiterate the importance of children understanding ‘stranger danger’ and ensuring there is an avenue to report similar behaviour to the police.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
