Heartless gang steal Meals on Wheels van from Bury hospital – nearly knocking down driver

By Danielle Wainwright

Callous thieves stole a Meals on Wheels hospital van outside Bealey Hospital on August 1 narrowly missing the driver when he tried to stop them fleeing with his vehicle.

The driver had parked his NHS Volkswagen Caddy outside the hospital on Dumers Lane at around 3.20pm to pick up empty trays when he was suddenly pushed to the floor.

Before he could get up he heard the engine of the van starting up and he ran over to block its path but was narrowly missed by the van which then drove off.

The driver was left shocked by the incident and the vehicle was later found abandoned on Coronation Road in Radcliffe.

Detective Constable Ahmed, of Bury South INPT, said: “The delivery van driver was simply trying to do his job when he was set upon.

“I now want to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened or if they saw the van being driven away afterwards.”

It is believed that the gang arrived in a white or silver old-style Mercedes C Class and one of the offenders was a white man with a slim build, around 6ft tall with mousey blond short hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8204 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
