Manchester United will be without new left-back Luke Shaw due to a hamstring injury for their opening month of the season.

Shaw, who was signed for £27million from Southampton after the teenager travelled to Brazil with England for his World Cup bow, was told by manager Louis van Gaal last month to improve his fitness.

United kick off their season against Swansea City on Saturday before a round two Capital One Cup trip to MK Dons.

After veteran defender Patrice Evra's departure to Juventus, Nemanja Vidic's move to Inter Milan and fellow centre back Rio Ferdinand signing with London club QPR, United are light in defence as they begin a new campaign under Dutchman Van Gaal.

The 63-year-old could give youth a chance in the Capital One Cup although, with no European fixtures on their plate for the first time since 1990, United might spy the competition as a good chance at silverware.

But they will have to make do without Shaw for the fixture in the week commencing August 25 against League One MK Dons.

United are seeking a fifth League Cup having lifted the trophy in 1992, 2006, 2009 and 2010.

Also drawn out of the hat were Bolton Wanderers, who will make a short journey down the M6 to visit Crew Alexandra.
