A Manchester self-storage company has proved it can be easy being green after winning a national Environmental Awareness Award today.

The Manchester branch of The Store Room was placed in the top five of 1200 storage companies in the UK after making significant efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.

Store manager Darren Shaw said that climate change is regularly in the news, and it was essential for everyone to do their bit.

“We are thrilled to win after making such an effort since the company was formed three years ago,” he said.

“We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously.”

The store already ensures their packaging is made from 75% recyclable material but also made other changes to secure the award.

They switched their billing system to email rather than paper and have no heating in the storage area or warehouse.

The staff have also installed sensored lighting and put their illuminated storefront sign on a timer so it switches off overnight.

Assistant Manager Steph Kelly said: “It was a great surprise when the certificate dropped through the door this morning.”

She explained the company can be friendlier with customers due to their small workforce of just 20 staff at six sites across the country.

Angus Hanton from storage.co.uk said: “The award is given out to celebrate initiatives that seek to minimise the impacts of self storage upon the environment.

“Self storage is quickly becoming a major industry in the UK and it’s increasingly hard for companies to stand out.

“These awards inform customers which storage firms are really going that extra mile to provide them with the best service.”

The company are determined to maintain their green ethos, and are working with the Carbon Trust to see how they can become even more energy efficient.

The Store Room has received glowing praise from corporate clients and the public alike.

"The staff are the most pleasant and helpful people I have had the pleasure to deal with in business,” said a Lancashire County Council spokesperson. “I would definitely recommend The Store Room to anyone."
