Deansgate drive-by shooting: Police face wall of silence in hunt for motorcycle gunman

Police investigating a shooting in Manchester city centre have launched a second appeal for witnesses to come forward after receiving a ‘limited response’ from the public.

Officers were called to a busy Deansgate bar The Living Room around 9pm on Thursday October 9, following reports that a gunman had fired shots outside and fled the scene on a motorbike with a man.

It is believed that the two men on the bike made a pass of the bar before the shots were fired, turning right down Wood Street before doubling back to the top of Deansgate.

Although no-one was injured police discovered the entrance to The Living Room doorway had been sprayed with bullets and they are now appealing for witnesses to help track down the gunmen.

Detective Sergeant Guy Laycock said: “We have had a limited response following our initial appeals for witnesses, but we need more people who were on Deansgate at the time to come forward with any information they might have.

“The CCTV footage we released last week clearly shows a number of people standing outside nearby bars and restaurants, as well as cars and taxis waiting in traffic behind the motorbike as the gunman takes aim.

“We need more of those people, those key witnesses, to come forward to assist with our enquiries.

“The CCTV images are helpful to the investigation, but what will really help us is those people who were stood outside the Living Room, the neighbouring bars or were driving past the motorcycle at the time of the attack.”

After the shooting, the bike made off down Deansgate and travelled the wrong way up King Street West.

A bike was then found burned out on Brotherton Drive in the Trinity area of Salford and police are still trying to establish if this is linked.

The bike found is now known to have been stolen during a burglary in Bolton in February 2014.

Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
