‘I can keep Oldham in League One’: Sheridan’s pledge as Latics face Bradford test

Returning Oldham Athletic manager John Sheridan is confident he can keep the Latics in League One despite describing his second spell at Boundary Park as his toughest test yet.

After retiring with the club as a player, fan-favourite Sheridan kick-started his managerial career with a stint in charge of Oldham and says he returns to unfinished business.

Oldham currently lie in the League One relegation places, but with just under half a season left the change of manager – after David Dunn’s sacking – has brought a renewed sense of optimism to the club.

“It will be tough – we are in a precarious position,” said Sheridan.

“But I don’t think there is a lot between the teams. I wouldn’t have come here if I thought we hadn’t a chance of staying up.

“I really do believe I can keep Oldham in this league, and that is my objective.”

The former Newport County and Plymouth Argyle boss inherits a weakened squad following last week’s departures of Danny Philliskirk and Mark Yeates to Blackpool, but says he is confident in his new charges’ ability.

His first test comes away to Bradford this weekend, with the 51-year-old already stamping his ideology on the side.

“It’s a clean slate for everyone, and my job is to pick a team who can go out and win football matches,” he said.

“It’s a really good game for us on Saturday. I’m going there believing that we can win and that’s what we’re going to try and do.

“I’ve picked my team and I know how we are going to play. I will be playing an attack-minded side.”

Sheridan asserted that he will stick to playing two strikers, which will please Oldham fans who have seen their side score three on just one occasion this term.

Latics’ strike options have been subject to much rotation under Dunn as he attempted to find the magic formula, and will be competing for a front-two berth to impress the new boss.

Sheridan has also been granted funds to bring in new players this month as he looks to steer his side away from danger.

More importantly, he will be seeking a first win in seven and just a fourth of the campaign at Valley Parade.
