Manchester’s Marriott Worsley Park will continue its affiliation with the PGA North Region after the schedule for the 2012 season was announced this week.

Despite the economic gloom, the PGA’s fixture list includes nine Order of Merit tournaments and a record prize-fund of £280,000 with the biggest prize purse being £20,000.

The Spirotech Open at Marriott Worsley Park will keep its place on the rota that will include a number of new tournaments with five ranking events doubling up as pro-ams to help boost revenue.

Graham Maly, Secretary of the PGA North Region, said: "We have bucked the trend in the last two years by introducing new events and all our main sponsors are supporting us again.

Mr Maly remains hopeful that despite the current economic climate the support for the tour will be increased in terms of the number of golf clubs wanting to host events and the number of participants the events will attract.

"We've lost a few pro-ams, which is not unexpected, but I'm confident there will be others in the pipeline, possibly at clubs celebrating centenaries," he said.

Andy Turner, Head Professional at The Knaresborough Golf Club, said: “The PGA North Region events offer professionals chances to keep competing in tournaments and not just be resigned to teaching at their club.”

“It’s great to see the addition of some more events and in particular the pro-ams as they give amateurs the opportunities for a day out and to play with some of the region’s best professionals.”

Five of the nine events have made their tournaments into a pro-am format, these include: the Renewable Service Group Pro-Am at Cottingham; the Pokerstars Manx Classic at Ramsey; the Kerr Investments Cumbria Classic at Silloth-on-Solway and Carlisle; the Rocar Moores and Copley Fixby Classic at Huddersfield and the Phoenix Gas Classic at Wychwood Park.

Completing the Order of Merit tournaments are the Spirotech Open at Marriott Worsley Park; the James Brearley Lancashire Open at Blackpool North Shore; the De Vere Leeds Cup at Oulton Hall and the De Vere PGA North Region Championship at Herons' Reach.

The PGA North Region have also announced  the previous format of running qualifying rounds for the major tournaments has been replaced by a Tour School comprising two-day 36-hole events at Normanton and Dunscar in April.
