Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure’s injury is not as bad as first feared, and could return to the fold within a fortnight, Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed.
The City manager had suggested the influential Ivory Coast international could miss the remainder of the season after limping out of Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool with a leg injury.
The loss at Anfield left third-placed City trailing leaders Liverpool by seven points, although they still have two games in hand.
Pellegrini has today confirmed Toure’s injury is not as bad as first feared, though Toure could still miss key games against Sunderland, West Brom and Crystal Palace.
With only six games left in the title run-in, City are aiming to get Toure fit for City’s crucial trip to Everton on May 3.
“Yaya has a muscle injury,” Pellegrini said. “We will see with the doctor how many days.
“Maybe it is not so hard as we thought at the beginning but I think he needs at least 10 days or two weeks to recover.”
Captain Vincent Kompany, who was a doubt for the Liverpool game after injuring his knee in training the previous day, has been declared fit for tomorrow’s match against Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.
Sergio Aguero, who came off the bench to play 22 minutes after a five-game absence due to a hamstring injury, has also been declared fit to face Sunderland.
Pellegrini said: “Vincent is okay. He is fit, he is in the squad list.
“Sergio is in the squad list also. We will see tomorrow (who) the 11 starters (are).”
