Champions League semi-final draw: Man City earn Real Madrid tie, Bayern v Atletico

Manchester City will face 10-times European champions Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The first leg will be hosted at the Etihad stadium on April 26, when former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale will return to English soil.

Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City sporting director, said: “It’s a great tie against the team that has won the competition the most times. But we have got this far and we want to keep dreaming.”

Manuel Pellegrini’s team knocked out Paris Saint German on Tuesday to reach the last four for the first time thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s goal.

Real launched a brilliant second-leg  comeback to beat Wolfsburg, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit through a Ronaldo hat-trick, running out 3-0 winners on the night.

In the other tie, Atletico Madrid will face next season’s City coach Pep Guardiola and his current Bayern Munich side.

Both City and Real are off the pace in their respective domestic leagues, and the Champions League represents both teams’ chance of securing a trophy this season.

The return leg in Spain will be contested on Wednesday May 4.
