Salford City Reds' Jodie Broughton admits club entering critical stage of season after Challenge Cup defeat

By Colin Henrys

Salford City Reds star Jodie Broughton admits the club are entering a crucial stage of their season after their Challenge Cup hopes were ended at Warrington Wolves last weekend.

Broughton scored the Red Devils’ only try in a crushing defeat to the holders, which leaves them needing to kick-start their Super League campaign to stop their season fizzling out.

And with Bradford Bulls visiting Barton Bridge on Friday before the Reds face Widnes Vikings at Magic Weekend, Broughton called on his team mates to perform more consistently.

“It’s definitely a crucial time for the club,” he told MM. “We need to improve on the last two weeks.

“Bradford is a winnable game for us, we always seem to run them close or get in a grind with them and I think we need to do that and put a bit of pressure on.

“[Magic Weekend] is something to look forward to. It’s always a big occasion and we’ve usually gone alright.

“I think there are signs of improvement in spells but in this game spells aren’t good enough."

The pacey winger, who has now scored six tries this year, also called for unity and hard work on the training field as the club’s transition continues.

“Everyone knows it’s a mad transition phase at the moment,” he added.

“Brian Noble’s just come in, and he’s here for two years I think, so there’ll be changes at the club in the forthcoming year.

“Everyone’s trying to fight for a spot in the new revolution but we all need to dig in, stick together every week and keep going as best we can.

“We’ll go back on the training field, practise what Brian’s got for us and hopefully we can execute it in the games.”
