Filming is underway on a first of its kind BBC One sitcom at Salford's MediaCityUK.

Citizen Khan began filming last night, following the lives of self-appointed Muslim community leader Mr Khan and his long-suffering family and friends.

With a cast boasting My Family's Kris Marshall and Eastenders' Shobu Kapoor, it is billed as a 'modern family sitcom' based in a Pakistani muslim household in Sparkhill, Birmingham.

Peter Salmon, Director BBC North, said: "The audience were rolling in the aisles at the Salford Sitcom Showcase and I am sure that Citizen Khan will have them roaring with laughter on BBC One."

The six-part series is the brainchild of Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto who worked on Goodness Gracious Me and journalist turned actor Adil Ray who co-wrote and stars as Mr Khan.

The show is due to air in Autumn with Marshall taking up the role of Mosque manager Dave Goody and Kapoor as Mr Khan's house-proud wife.

Ray has previously showcased Mr Khan on BBC Two series Bellamy's People and Radio Four's Down The Line as well as Salford Sitcom Showcase in October 2011.
