Altrincham FC are celebrating after being crowned the inaugural winners of the Football Conference’s Repect award for their contribution to the league last season.

The Robins, who finished 8th in the Blue Square Premier League in the 2011/12 campaign, picked up the 24” trophy at last weekend’s annual meeting and awards dinner.

The club were adjudged to have made the best contribution towards the competition’s efforts of improving respect towards officials, a campaign that is prominent throughout the game.

Chairman Grahame Rowley paid tribute to the efforts of everyone in the club who contributed to the success, beating the other 67 clubs in both sections of the league.

He said: “Everyone contributed – supporters, staff, management and players – and everyone should feel proud at portraying Altrincham in such a favourable light.

“It matters that we are viewed as a family-friendly club, and it is good to know that others do see us that way.”

The Moss Lane club won both the Blue Square North award and the overall award, while Dartford FC were crowned winners of the Blue Square South title.

The club had not been informed of their success prior to the awards ceremony in Newport on Saturday June 9.

Mr Rowley received the trophy from host Caroline Walker, from the BBC’s non-league show and described it as a 'very proud moment'.

He said: “They had kept it quiet, and I must say it was a lovely surprise when I got there and was told about it.

“It was one thing finishing second to Nuneaton in the Blue Square Bet North Fair Play table, but this was a real feather in our cap.”
