'She would slap me down': Back of mum's hand keeps rising Manchester United ace Tom Cleverley grounded

Twelve sensational months of rapid growth has fired Tom Cleverley into fame and spotlight, but even Manchester United and England stars cannot escape a backhand from their mum if needed.

The 23-year-old midfielder has broken back into Sir Alex Ferguson’s starting line-up as well as cementing his place in Roy Hodgson’s team all in just over a year.

But sponsorship endorsements off pitch have led many to question the young man’s speed of development – not that the United ace agrees.

"I don't want to sit here and say I am completely level-headed but it does annoy me a bit when people say I am getting ahead of myself," Cleverley said.

"I have got my feet on the floor and have already tried to stay grounded.

"I got a day off on Saturday and went back to my mum's in Bradford. She would slap me down if it was needed.”

Cleverley architected five goals for England during their thumping of San Marino on Friday and has settled comfortably alongside club teammates Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck.

But he knows that good performances must be matched by trophies if his career is to be hailed a success.

"I don't know if I would ever say I have made it,” Cleverley added.

"Careers can be judged on appearances and titles, and I have not got many of either so there is a long way to go."
