Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand issues England World Cup rallying cry with ‘3-0 brushing of Poland’ tweet

By Tim Hyde

Ever-confident Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand is certain that England can ease through their must-win final qualifier at Wembley tonight against Poland.

The former England man, who won 81 caps, claims the Three Lions will easily overcome their opponents and book their place at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

With Group H top-spot rivals Ukraine just a point behind and practically guaranteed a win against minnows San Marino, England must win tonight in order to clinch the automatic qualification place – or risk facing a tricky play-off match against countries including France and Sweden.

Ferdinand was not worried about the situation however as he took to Twitter to rally the troops.

“Looking forward to watching England win tonight, it’ll be convincing too, a 3-0 brushing of Poland me thinks!”

However, the majority of England supporters do not share the same confidence as the national team have failed at the last hurdle before.

Both teams have been in this exact position before as Poland held England to a 1-1 draw in 1973 which saw the hosts fail to reach the following summer’s World Cup, while in 2007 Steven Gerrard and co failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

Poland may be out of the World Cup but Wembley will be full to the brim with 18,000 noisy away supporters, who will be doing their best to ruffle England’s feathers.
