Jimmy Savile sex scandal: Former Manchester BBC radio host Dave Lee Travis arrested over child abuse claims

Former Manchester BBC Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis is being quizzed by police investigating the colossal child sex abuse scandal linked to Jimmy Savile.

The 67-year-old was arrested by officers this morning at his home in Bedfordshire and remains in custody – he is the fourth person to be probed by police along with BBC producer Wilfred De’ath, Gary Glitter and Freddie Starr.

Travis hosted the breakfast show from 1978 to 1980 after moving to host Manchester to host Pop North from 1968.

He faced allegations by a 17-year-old girl following the investigation into Savile’s historic sex abuse but denied any claims made against him.

“I categorically deny that there is any substance in either allegation and I’m genuinely surprised that allegations of this nature have been made,” he said. “I totally refute [sic] any impropriety.”

The number of alleged victims who have contacted police has grown at a horrifying rate and is reported to be up to as much as 450.

Police confirmed that they have arrested a 67-year-old man who is being held as enquiries continue.
