Bury’s Flitcroft says lack of training facility will be Shakers’ future ‘Achilles heel’

Bury manager David Flitcroft has praised the Shakers’ ability to nurture young talent despite not having their own training facility.

Bury have prided themselves on developing young English talent and remain in the League Two promotion hunt in ninth, 13 points behind Wycombe Wanderers, Saturday’s opponents at the JD Stadium.

However Flitcroft, who has been in charge at Bury since December 2013, feels that the lack of training pitches will eventually hinder the club’s progress.

“It’s going to be our Achilles heel because we definitely need somewhere consistent to train – we’re really having to struggle through,” he said.

“It’s part of our remit to really want to develop players and I think we’ve shown good form with that, I think it’s been prolific.

“Even without having a training pitch I can see the development of Nathan Cameron and nearly every single player that has come to the football club.”

Commanding centre back Cameron, who joined the Shakers from League One Coventry City in 2013, has been attracting interest from several Championship clubs this season.

Flitcroft revealed that the club had been in talks with Premier League champions Manchester City about taking over their vacant Carrington facilities before Christmas.

However despite City’s move to their multi-million pound Academy, Bury were unable to agree a deal and are continuing their search.

The Shakers have been utilising a range of artificial pitches because the bad weather that has hit the North West recently has played havoc with their schedule.

Last Friday’s match against Accrington Stanley was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch, but Flitcroft utilised the extra time to prepare for this weekend’s fixture.

“All the lads came in on Friday and we went across to Manchester late on to do a fantastic, tough session with the boys,” he added.

“It was difficult getting them up for that because they were frustrated and disappointed but we had to start planning for the Wycombe game.

“We’ve had a fantastic training week, really high tempo and high levels of concentration and performance.”
