Baby's first journey home? Airport run for family holiday? Study reveals top time to drive for Manchester motorists

Making the journey home on a Friday evening is the happiest and most enjoyable time Manchester’s motorists spend in their car, even better than went en route to the airport for holidays, according to a new study.

A staggering 45% of Mancunian residents said driving home to start the weekend was their favourite drive time – pipping the feeling of taking a newborn baby home and ride home to start Christmas.

The figure is double that who cited the airport run before going on holiday and treble that who said the drive to church on their wedding day.

“I certainly agree with this research, by the time Friday rolls around I am ready for home,” said 29-year-old Matthew Holden, an airline pilot from Ramsbottom.

Only a tenth of Mancunians said taking their newborn baby home for the first time from hospital was their happiest car journey, a figure Mr Holden thinks should be higher.

“I am recently a father and that journey home was very special indeed and one I will remember forever,” he added.

“But the drive home from work is a weekly occurrence and because I’m getting back home to the family, that has to be my favourite.”

Yvonne Horrocks, a 33-year-old physiotherapist from Bury, agrees with a fifth of the Greater Manchester population who say their preferred journey is that to the airport before a holiday.

“I completely understand why people like the journey home from work and it is always a nice feeling knowing you have a few days off,” she said.

“But knowing you have a week or a fortnight to yourself and you are about to fly somewhere hot and soak up some sun means a drive to the airport is my top journey.”

And it seems there was little Christmas cheer on offer in Manchester in 2012, with a paltry 11% saying they were happiest driving home to start the festive season.

The overriding result found by the study carried out by Carcraft is that people from Manchester like finishing for the weekend, with the percentage across Greater Manchester slightly higher than the country as a whole.

Robert Timms, a 26-year-old civil servant from Cheadle, agreed with the research but said he might be forced to change his mind over the next year or so.

“At the present time the drive home from work on a Friday is definitely the best car journey,” he said.

“But I proposed to my girlfriend before Christmas and plan to marry her later this year, so I may alter my view, we will have to see how the wedding day goes.”
