Great Britain men’s water polo team set for FINA World League action at Manchester Aquatics Centre

Great Britain's male water polo team are looking to claim their first victory of the year in the FINA World League match against Russia on Tuesday.

The team – assured of an Olympic spot after taking the host nation’s allocation – play their home games at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

Although they have no chance to qualify for June’s Super Final in Kazakhstan – Italy have won all four matches against Russia and Great Britain -  the GB team will want to get something out of next week’s game to avoid finishing the preliminary stage pointless.

It was always going to be tough for Great Britain to progress – Italy are the reigning World Champions having won gold at the World Aquatic Championships in China last year.  They also came second in last year’s FINA World League to Serbia.

So far in the preliminaries, Great Britain have lost away to Russia 12-8 and Italy 14-1, while showing a more competitive edge in the home game against the qualifiers before going down 14-6.

The match kicks off at 8pm at the Aquatics Centre on Booth Street East.  It is easily accessible via Oxford Road.

Tickets are available for just £5 for adults and £4 for under 16s and OAPs – probably the cheapest you will be able to watch members of Team GB in action in Olympic year.
