FA Cup finalists Manchester City ‘could have done better’ this season, says Argentine star Sergio Aguero

By Paddy von Behr

Manchester City can look back on this season with a sense of regret, according to Sunday’s FA Cup semi final match winner Sergio Aguero.

Roberto Mancini’s side set up a final with Wigan Athletic on Sunday, thanks to Aguero’s second half strike against Chelsea.

However, poor showings in the Premier League and Champions League have left the Argentine demanding improvements next year.

“We could have done better,” he said.

“We have a great team, a strong squad, that is capable of fighting to win more trophies.”

City are 15 points adrift of Manchester United in the league and face an impossible task to retain their title.

However, they can regain their FA Cup crown when they meet Wigan at Wembley next month.

Aguero, who escaped retrospective action for a two-footed lunge on David Luiz in the semi-final, believes ending the year with a trophy is vital.

“We’re really happy to be in the final,” he said.

“This year, we cannot win the league, we are too far away, but this is an important cup in England, for the club, and for everyone.

“It’s crucial that we try to win something every year, whether that’s a cup or the league.

“It is a club that has not won a lot in the past and at least if we win one trophy then everything is good for the club.”

City face a dress rehearsal for the final on Wednesday night, when Wigan visit the Etihad Stadium – their first of three remaining midweek games.

However, Aguero is confident he and his teammates will not suffer from burnout as the season draws to a close.

“We are a team that works very hard and that means we are all very tired,” he said. “But yes, we have a lot of energy.

“We will all be able to give our all until the season ends, so that we can finish on a high, finishing well in the league and winning the cup.”
