Recession worries see 94% of Manchester residents sacrifice health by choosing drinking and socialising over going to the dentist

Socialising is more important than health to 94% of Manchester residents according to new research which reveals how care treatments are delayed to save money.

The Sovereign Health Care study found that 75% will have to postpone health treatment, such as going to the dentist, to save money this year as the UK slipped into another recession.

Stretching budgets also meant that 33% would push back appointments as people would rather delay these than cut back on drinking, socialising and entertainment.

Russ Piper, Chief Executive of Sovereign Health Care says: “Neglecting your health is potentially more expensive and dangerous in the long run as you can increase both the severity of the problems you face and the cost of the treatment you need.”

“Treatments such as chiropody and physiotherapy can be costly,” he added. “But they can be affordable with a health care cash plan as you can often claim back some of the costs.”

The rising prices of healthy foods such as fruit and vegetables saw 31% choose cheaper processed foods in order to save money.

And 84% view certain therapies, such as physiotherapy, as luxuries rather than necessities.

Mental health is also being affected as 74% of Mancunians said they have grown increasingly concerned about managing their household budget over the last year.

Sovereign Health Care is one of the UK’s leading providers of wellbeing treatment cash plans, which are designed to help manage the cost of everyday health care.

But 83% are unaware about the affordable plans and how they can benefit from using them, such as claiming tax free cash back for a wide range of treatments such as glasses, contact lenses, and dentist or hospital visits.

Mr Piper added: “A health care cash plan can help you manage your household budget better and can give you added peace of mind that affordability doesn’t have to be a reason for delaying treatment and compromising your health, as you will get cash back towards the costs.”
