A man has been arrested in connection with a ‘suspicious package’ that sparked a bomb scare when it was left outside a Middleton benefits office this morning.

Police were called around 5am when a suspicious package was discovered outside the Job Centre on Oldham Road.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team established that the package was not a viable explosive device.

The package has now been recovered and there is no threat to any members of the public.

A man has now been arrested on suspicion of making a hoax bomb call. He remains in police custody for questioning.

Precautionary road closures have now been taken down and traffic is returning to normal.
