Masked gang wielding sledgehammers smash through Rusholme jewellery store

By Danielle Wainwright

A gang of robbers brandishing sledgehammers terrified staff at a Rusholme jewellery shop on Sunday when they smashed through the front window and stole the items on display.

The four men had parked a black Audi S3 outside the Wilmslow Road jewellery store at around 2.45pm on July 14.

They walked up to the front window and smashed through grabbing the items on display.

Terrified staff inside the shop tried to close the shutters before the men, who had their faces covered and wore gloves, got back inside the car and drove off.

Detective Inspector Theresa Carter, based at Longsight Police Station, said: “Fortunately no one was hurt but the fact that staff witnessed these men smash the front window with sledgehammers while they were inside has affected them greatly.

“No one expects to go to work and be put through this type of ordeal when they get there.

“We believe a number of witnesses saw what happened and we have been told that they were throwing objects at the men in an attempt to stop them. I would ask these people and anyone else who think they may have seen something suspicious to contact police.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 4243 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
