By John McDougall

Former Old Trafford hero David Beckham has urged wantaway striker Wayne Rooney not to leave Premier League champions Manchester United.

The 27-year-old England striker is understood to be considering his future with the Red Devils, having allegedly asked ex-boss Sir Alex Ferguson for a transfer last season.

Ferguson refused it and now Beckham – who left United for Real Madrid in 2003 – feels Rooney should knuckle down and stay at the club.

“I hope he stays because Wayne is such a talented player and I see him as a Manchester United player,” the 38-year-old told Sky Sports News.

“Obviously that’ll be his decision and his decision only. As a United fan, I want to see the best players at the club and I hope he stays.”

Beckham brought down the curtain on his glittering 20-year career last season, winning the Ligue 1 title with his final club Paris Saint-Germain.

Having coming through the ranks at Old Trafford, Beckham spent a decade in the first-team, winning six Premier League and a Champions League title.

The ex-England captain admits new boss David Moyes faces a daunting task succeedingFerguson, but will be helped along the way to success.

“I’m sure he has had lot of mentoring, he is one of those managers that has always picked up the phone and spoken to Sir Alex,” he explained.

“It was always going to be difficult job for whoever succeeded Sir Alex because of what the manager has brought to Manchester United, what he has brought to the game.

“But the same players are there and I’m sure a few more will be added over the next few weeks. Being manager of Manchester United is a great job.”

With Manuel Pellegrini and Jose Mourinho at Manchester City and Chelsea respectively, Beckham admits the Premier League will be as competitive as ever – but is tipping United to triumph.

“It’s going to be interesting this year as there have been so many changes throughout the Premier League,” he added.

“Jose is back and that’s exciting. It’s going to be interesting, but I still think United will win the league. I’m a Manchester United fan!”
