In the thick of it: David Moyes more ‘hands-on’ than Sir Alex in Manchester United training, says Michael Carrick

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick insists new manager David Moyes has brought in energy and enthusiasm to the Premier League champions.

The 50-year-old Glaswegian succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson as Old Trafford boss on July 1 and has a six-year contract with the Premier League champions.

And with a more hands-on involvement in training than 71-year-old Ferguson, Carrick feels Moyes has already made his mark on the Red Devils squad.

“The manager is hands-on in training. He’s a lot different to Sir Alex in that sense,” he told United’s official website.

“He tended to take a step back and let the coaches deal with things, whereas David likes to be right in the thick of it and that’s good.

“It creates an intensity and everyone has responded to that. There is a great atmosphere around the place.

“The manager has brought that in. He’s enthusiastic and energetic and intense with his work, and that’s rubbed off on everyone.”

Carrick and most of the United squad – most notably minus an injured Wayne Rooney – are currently on a pre-season Far East tour, visiting Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.

Moyes faced the daunting task of succeedingFerguson’s 26-year reign as United boss, becoming the most successful British manager of all-time.

With the squad adjusting to a new boss, Carrick feels the process is mutual but knows as manager and team begin to gel, the club will get stronger and stronger.

“I’m sure as time goes on that we’ll all improve together,” he explained.

“The coaches and the manager have different views on different things so it is something that we’re getting used to, but I’m sure it’s the same for him getting used to us.”
