Beware of Chorley conmen: Police urge elderly to be vigilant after couple targeted in home by crooks

By Sam Ruffe

Residents in Standish are being urged to remain cautious after a conman swindled money from an elderly couple’s house yesterday.

The unsuspecting OAP’s received a knock at their Chorley Road house from a man claiming he needed to turn off their water following an emergency down the road.

But after he left the couple became suspicious, and after a search of the property discovered cash had been taken from their bedroom.

Police Constable Sophie Roberts said: “I would ask anyone who have seen these men or believe they may have fallen victim to a similar crime to contact police as soon as possible.

“The victims grew suspicious when the man did not come back to turn on their water supply and checked the house to see if anything had been stolen.

“It was at this point he realised an amount of money had been taken.”

The man is described as being white, 5ft 9in tall, in his mid-30s with dark slicked back hair and was smartly dressed in dark trousers and jacket.

His alleged accomplice was described by witnesses as being white, in his 30s, with a round face, shaved head and wearing a grey fleece.

This incident comes just a day after the same 78-year-old man and 75-year-old woman were approached by a man with a Liverpool accent offering to work on their chimney.

After paying the man the couple realised the work had been completed to a very poor standard, however PC Roberts believes the two events may just be coincidental.

She said: “At this moment in time we are unsure whether both incidents are linked and are urging members of the community to remain vigilant.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 7203 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
