Legendary striker Eric Cantona is urging Sir Alex Ferguson to be Manchester United manager ‘for ever’, but would be willing to fill his shoes if the Scot retires.
The Frenchman is currently director of soccer for MLS side New York Cosmos after his post-United career took him to beach football, acting and politics.
But the four-time Premier League winner admitted that one day he would be happy to take the hotseat at Old Trafford – a position that no one could snub.
“I would say, ‘United is special, of course I would do it’.
“Today I’m with the New York Cosmos. But if one day there is an opportunity, why not?
“Like diving from here to the sea, watching, speaking to the fish, octopus, crabs, journalists.”
The enigmatic Reds hero heaped praise on his old boss and insisted he is the sole reason that United have become the most successful team in English history.
“Alex Ferguson is young, has so much energy, so much love of the game, so many things to give, more and more and more,” said Cantona.
“And I love to watch them winning things and I want Ferguson to be manager for ever.”
