Everybody hurts: Flitcroft's pain as Bury continue miserable away form

| By Ross Kelsall

David Flitcroft has asked the Bury fans to keep supporting his side as the Shakers miserable away form continued with a 1-0 defeat at Morecambe.

Kevin Ellison's second half goal was enough for the Shrimpers to condemn Bury to their fourth defeat in five away league games.

After exiting the JPT earlier in the week, Flitcroft says he understands the fans’ frustrations and that the results also affect him.

“Our away support is unreal and I'm hurting like them. I just want them to stick with us,” he said.

“The fans come to the matches with high expectations and so they should – we've got a team of quality.

“The stats don't lie, our away form isn't good enough and I've got to find answers – not being able to deliver away from home is hurting me.”

More than a thousand travelling fans backed the promotion chasing side at the Globe Arena on Saturday – just shy of half of the match attendance.

The Shakers have not won away from home in all competitions since Saturday September 13 and have dropped to fifth in the League Two table.

It is Bury’s home form that is keeping them in the playoff places at the moment but Flitcroft believes ‘outstanding’ home form needs to be coupled with ‘good’ away form.

“You start off any football match and you’ve got a point and if you keep a clean sheet you’re protecting that point,” he added.

“Away from home the first thing you have to do is respect the point – we’ll work really hard this week to make sure we get a performance on Saturday.”

There was also sad news for the club as former players Valery Mezague died aged just 30 on Saturday after being found dead in his apartment by police.

The Cameroon midfielder played seven times for the Shakers last season and also had a spell with 2008 FA Cup winners Portsmouth.
