‘I’m back for good’: Darren Fletcher’s delight at Manchester United return after long-term illness

By Scott Hunt

Darren Fletcher says the health issues that kept him off the pitch for almost a year are behind him and he is ready to make a full return for Manchester United.

The Scot was a second half substitute against Aston Villa – his first appearance since Boxing Day 2012 after which he had surgery on a chronic bowel condition.

Fletcher is optimistic that the Villa game marks his permanent return to football.

“This is it – I’m back for good,” Fletcher told MUTV.

“It’s onwards and upwards now. I always believed I would come back – I kept that mindset.

“Getting an ovation like that makes it all worthwhile. Ever since I was a kid I’ve wanted to play football and I think I’ve got plenty more years of playing left in me.”

Before his illness Fletcher was one of the first names on Sir Alex Ferguson’s team-sheet and if he can regain full fitness will be a welcome addition for David Moyes.

The 29-year-old who made his United debut in 2003 is determined to fight his way back to be a regular in the first team.

“I could have a career all over again if I get my health right,” Fletcher said.

“I’m still building up my fitness but I don’t want to take it easy – I want to be involved to get us back to where I know we should be.

“Ultimately the goal is to play in the first team, to be a part of the plans and to bring success back to Manchester United.”
