Mourinho makes his move: Chelsea start bidding for Manchester United’s wantaway striker Wayne Rooney

By Marios Papaloizou

A £10million plus either Juan Mata or David Luiz offer has reportedly been tabled for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea spoke to Manchester United last night as Jose Mourinho seeks to lure away the disgruntled England star.

According to reports in the Daily Mail, United have immediately rejected the initial approach from the London club and appear to be holding firm with the official line that the player is not for sale.

Whether this is a tactical decision in order to draw the most from any negotiations remains to be seen as Chelsea consider upping their offer.

Rooney is apparently ‘angry and confused’ by new manager David Moyes’ handling of the situation and comments made earlier this week that suggested Rooney was only needed as backup to Robin Van Persie.

With a player of Mata’s quality on offer a deal could be close and should Chelsea make an improved bid United’s resolve in the Rooney saga will be truly tested.
