Chelsea confirm cash bid for Wayne Rooney but slam Manchester United over claims they offered Mata or Luiz

By Marios Papaloizou

Chelsea FC have blasted Manchester United over claims that they had offered Juan Mata or David Luiz as bait to lure Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge.

It had been widely reported that Chelsea had offered £10million plus either of the two players to Manchester United as part of a bid for Wayne Rooney.

However, Chelsea have vehemently denied offering any player to the Reds – stating only cash was offered for wantaway Rooney.

A statement from Chelsea read: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.

“Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to the press in Sydney [where United are currently based], the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United.”
