Love is in the street: Aussie cobbles together help to pop question to ‘die-hard’ Corrie fiancé on tour of set

Distant bells could be heard at the Coronation Street Tour yesterday as a ‘die-hard’ Corrie fan was left flabbergasted after her partner’s surprise proposal on the cobbles.

Charlie Acton could not believe her eyes as the doors to Nick’s Bistro opened to reveal her partner perched down on one knee.

Keith Monks, 31 from Perth, Australia, was positioned with a ring while close friends Ellie-May Flannery and her partner Jay Pennington held a banner reading, ‘Charlie, will you marry me?’ that decorated the background of what was – for the avid fan  a perfect picture.

“Charlie is a huge fan of Coronation Street and so I thought it would be a great idea to propose on the tour.” said a joyous Keith.

GOBSMACKED: Keith’s proposal caught his fiancé off guard

As the tour is open for a limited time only, Keith wasted no time in taking advantage of what he saw as a unique opportunity to surprise his childhood sweetheart.

A proposal on the cobbles of the nation’s favourite street is not an everyday occurrence – so it is safe to say she got more than she expected, and Charlie’s answer was yes.

Organising a proposal from the other side of the world may seem like a daunting challenge, but with the help of friends in England and the team at the Coronation Street Tour, Keith’s surprise went off without a hitch.

Keith added: “I was so happy that it was a surprise for her, it will be a fantastic story to tell our grandkids in the future.”

Charlie’s tour guide Andy Steele made it his mission to ensure the doors to Nick’s Bistro were opened by Charlie herself, enabling the grand reveal onto the street to run smoothly and successfully.

The wife-to-be was unexpectedly presented with a blushing boyfriend, surrounded by an additional crowd of supporters who also waited in anticipation for her arrival.

The now frabjous fiancée said: “I had absolutely no idea. I am a die-hard Coronation Street fan and this was just brilliant. Even though we live in Australia I never miss an episode.

“I am so happy.”

The proposal comes after last month’s announcement from tour operators that the former set now has a wedding license.

With an opportunity to get married inside the Rovers Return, there is certainly potential for Mr and Mrs Monks to return for a soap-set shin-dig.
