Christmas is key: Danny Welbeck eyes up productive festive period for Manchester United

By Paddy von Behr

Danny Welbeck has urged his Manchester United teammates to capitalise on their Premier League lead as they head into the busy festive period.

The Reds took all three points in last weekend’s Manchester derby and will look to maintain their lead into the New Year and regain the title.

Welbeck, who has netted just one goal this season, is aware of how key this month could be for the club.

“It’s a vital period and a time all the boys look forward to,” he said.

“Games come thick and fast now and it’s important you pick up the pace over Christmas.”

He added: “To go six points clear was a great boost for us. We won’t be complacent though – every point counts.”

Winger Ashley Young believes the secret to maintaining United’s stranglehold into the second half of the Premier League season is momentum.

The Reds have won their last four league games and continuing that form through December and into the New Year would keep them in prime position.

"There are so many games and if you can get momentum you can take that into the New Year," said Young.

"Teams can drop points and as long as you keep picking up points home and away that's what's important.

“You have to be on your toes and be ready for the challenge.”
