A man was stabbed and left for dead by two men demanding his car keys as he was stepping out of his own front door in Greater Manchester yesterday.

The 59-year-old man, of Worcester Avenue, Hindley, is currently in a critical condition in hospital where he is being treated for stab wounds.

He was approached by two men shortly after 9.55am who immediately stabbed him multiple times and demanded the keys to his white C220 Mercedes.

Detective Inspector Graham Atherton from Wigan CID said: “This was a horrendous attack on a defenceless man which has left him fighting for his life in hospital.

“These two men approached him on the doorstep and before they demanded his car keys they stabbed him multiple times and left him for dead.”

His attackers ran off down Worcester Avenue without the car keys. It is believed they ran down an alleyway towards Smithwood Avenue.

“I am sure local residents will be shocked and angered by what has happened, but I want to try to reassure them that we have a team of experienced detectives working on the investigation and determined to find the men responsible,” DI Atherton said.

“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the attack or saw men matching these descriptions in the area to contact me as soon as possible, you information could be vital to our investigation.”

The two men are described as white, one was wearing a pale pink/red top with his face covered and the other wore a pale blue top with stripes down the sleeves.

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 5307 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
