Tameside ‘terror’ probe: Girl, 16, released without charge – boy remains in custody

A 16-year-old girl who was arrested on terror charges in Tameside has been released without charge – but a boy of the same age remains in custody.

On February 16, searches were executed at Hanover Street and Spring Mill Drive in Mossley following an investigation by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.

A 16-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were arrested, with the former still being questioning by police.

It is alleged that the pair were either concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

There is no intelligence or evidence to suggest that communities within the Mossley or Greater Manchester area are, or were, at risk in relation to this investigation.

GMP Chief Superintendent Caroline Ball said: “I stress there is no current threat to either the Mossley community or wider and there is no reason to be unduly worried.

“If anyone is concerned, please approach one of local officers who will be happy to speak to you.”

Anyone with concerns about suspicious activity should contact local officers or the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789321.
