Mum who suffocated children on trial – five months after TV psychic husband found hanged in Strangeways

A mother who killed her two young children in a Spanish hotel is due in court today – five months after her TV psychic husband hanged himself in Manchester’s Strangeways.

Lianne Smith admitted to suffocating her five-year-old daughter Rebecca and 11-month-old son Daniel in Costa Brava hotel Miramer Hotel in May 2010.

The tragic incidents occurred shortly after her husband Martin Smith was sentenced to 16 years in prison for 11 charges of rape, attempted rape and indecency with a child.

Smith was found hanged in his cell in Strangeways prison in January this year after he used hypnosis, bullying and violence to groom and sexually abuse his victim.

Smith is on trial for murder in Girona, North East Spain, but her lawyer claimed she was in a state of ‘psychiatric disturbance’ during the killings.

The family moved to Spain in 2007 after fleeing Lichfield, Staffordshire, after Smith’s conviction of abusing a young girl.

But he was arrested by Spanish police in Barcelona and was deported to the UK.

His wife faces 19 years in prison if found guilty and her trial is expected to last four days.
