‘Never forget their great sacrifice’: Tributes to Manchester officers on anniversary of Cregan murders

By Marios Papaloizou

The ‘great sacrifice’ of two young police officers is being remembered today – one year on from their murder by gangster Dale Cregan.

Nicola Hughes, 23, and Fiona Bone, 32, were shot in cold blood by Cregan last year as they investigated a suspected burglary in Hattersley.

Tributes have now been made to the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said: “We will never forget their great sacrifice.

“We think of the families of Fiona and Nicola, of their friends and colleagues and the people of Hattersley.

“We remember our two young officers, who had their whole lives ahead of them but were taken cruely from us doing the job they loved.”

There will be a memorial service at Hyde police station to remember the fallen officers and a minute silence will be observed by the force at 10.53 – the time the officers were killed.

PC Nicola Hughes’ stepmother, Nat Hughes, said: “It’s difficult to believe it has been a year. So many things have happened and I think it has not been a normal situation, it has been crazy.

“So many people have been positive. So many people have wanted to remember Nicola and have been so supportive for us.

“In another respect it has been like just revisiting it constantly and with the trial and everything it has been difficult to move forward.”
