Corrie stars get weird and Wonderland at ball to raise £80K for breast cancer

A spectacular Wonderland-themed ball hosted by Manchester charity Genesis attracted celebrity guests and raised £80,000 in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Month last weekend.

The event was held at Lancashire County Cricket Club’s The Point and was compered by Comedienne Pauline Daniels, who recently battled with the disease herself.

Sally Dynevor, who plays Coronation Street’s Sally Webster and is a patron of Genesis, attended as well as her colleague Bruno Langley – Todd Grimshaw in the ITV soap.

Sally said: “I’ve been a patron of Genesis’ for many years and the charity is very close to my heart. It’s always great to see so many people come together to celebrate this wonderful charity and this year’s ball was no different.

“One in 10 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. Genesis’ mission is to make one in 10, none in 10. I’d like to thank everyone who attended this year’s ball – their support is helping us make a breast cancer free future a reality.”

Live music from the ‘King of Swing’ Andy Prior and his band had the guests on their feet.

There was also a charity auction, all the proceeds of which went to Genesis.

Lester Barr, Genesis chairman, said: “The Wonderland Ball has, once again, surpassed expectations.

“Genesis receives no Government funding and so events such as this are incredibly important.

“It has been wonderful to see so many familiar faces supporting Genesis by attending.”

The event is the first of many to be held this month in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Tonight, a special comedy night starring a brave team of lawyers will take place at the Contact Theatre.

Professional Comedienne Dana Alexander is hosting the event, and barrister Sally Harrison QC, Frances Heaton QC and their friend Penny Haslem will perform for the one-off SJB Courting Comedy event.

As the only charity in the UK entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of Breast Cancer, Genesis relies heavily on donations and charity fundraisers.
