Google Doodle celebrate festive family ballet The Nutcracker as Tchaikovsky classic set to grace Manchester

With one of the most famous family ballets The Nutcracker braced to grace Manchester with the arrival of 2013, Google Doodle are honouring the 120th anniversary of the fantasy play today.

The two-act production was memorably scored by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and was premiered at the Marijnsky Theatre, St Petersburg, on December 18 1892.

The Sugar Plum Fairy Dance composition remains an iconic soundtrack for Christmas and was famed for its use of the celesta – a well-used instrument by Tchaikovsky.

And with one week to go until Christmas – the day of The Nutcracker is upon us again as Herr Drosselmeyer's battles to rescue his nephew from the claws of the Mouse King.

While Disney classic The Lion King amazes audiences at The Palace Theatre until April 20, another animated favourite The Nutcracker is set to make three appearances at The Bridgewater Hall.

The Russian State Ballet & Orchestra of Siberia will deliver the sensational ballet in full on January 3 and 4 at 7.30pm – with an additional matinée showing at 2.30pm on the final day.
